  • TYPES OF FOOD TO EAT

    Hello
I am aware of my dieraary requirements however I sometimes cheat and I need to understand the ramifications of eating certain types of food

  • #2
You need to watch your potassium and phosphorus and sodium intake because if you don't your kidneys will be affected by this. I too cheat once in a while, but most of the time I pretty much stick to the recipes on this site. I am already in stage 4 and I'd like to stay there for a good long while yet. I don't know if that's the information you were looikng for, but I hope it helped.

I am a new dialysis patient and also diabetic, I am confused as to what is allowed and not. I know phosphorous, potassium and sodium, watch carbs but I don’t want to eat broccoli for the rest of my life

Protein is best.. eat chicken, turkey, fish , and eggs. There are still a lot of things we can eat. I am diabetic too and just started HD 3 months ago. I was very overwhelmed at first. Talk to a dietician and get a list of the food to stay away from.. you don't have to eat broccoli forever!!

Ok this is to the1tasha. I have just looked around the site and found a place you can get recipes for diabetics. On this page you go to KIDNEY EDUCATION and on the right hand side of the page that comes up will be a bar that says SEARCH MY DAVITA.COM. In that bar type the words RECIPES FOR DIABETICS and it will take you to a whole list of places you can get recipes from. Sorry I didn't answer this sooner, but I just found it myself. Good luck to you.

I'm CKD, stage4, and I started my journey with diet changes about a year ago. In addition to losing over 45lbs by diet alone, I've learned to scour the internet and adapt recipes that are not only delicious but are not a determent to my kidneys. As cpi3per1 noted, a great place to start is the Davita website. It has a wealth of great tasting foods to cook. Once you learn to identify foods that are potentially dangerous, you can easily adapt recipes that fit your health and lifestyle. Learn to use fresh and dray herbs in your meal preparations. I for one have grown to love garlic powder and lemon pepper. The lemon and pepper combine to create a taste that eliminates my occasional urge to add salt to my foods.

I cooked a 'natural' turkey (meaning not injected with salt solution or other preservatives) and prepared an olive oil based herb run. It was the best turkey I've ever eaten in some 60 Thanksgivings. It was so tender it literally fell off the bones. Forget highly processed foods. It took me all of 15 minutes prep for the most moist bird I've even eaten. Learning to cook healthy for our kidneys is not difficult. It just takes time to research.

I am CKD stage 4. I thought we were supposed to avoid protein. I am also diabetic type 2. I will be looking into recipes. If I have diabetes can i still have a transplant? I'm new so just starting to learn what I need to do.

Hello , I’m stage 3 now about 2 years ago I was stage 4., I changed kidney dr and soon learned what I ate and drank made a big difference in my life , he explained everything that entered my mouth mattered , the sugar free candy drop to help with thirst , the sugar free cough drop, all drinks, all food, which I mainly drank water , but it all matters and it all can add up ! I made changes paid closer attention and within 8 months my function improve and now stage 3 , I’ll tell you when the other dr started talking about my future and no hope cause I was knocking on stage 5 door , as he said, that was scary and I’m so thankful I made change and now have a wonderful dr and I’m healthier. It takes time to plan but worth every second !!

Delia53.... pre dialysis you are suppose to do low protein but once on dialysis it becomes different and you need higher protein. Confusing I know until you read enough and start retaining it.
