  • Diet Confusion

Hello, I am new to kidney disease, and am navigating through unchartered territory. I am a Type 2 Diabetic with Diabetic Nephropathy and stage 2 kidney disease. My potassium is high (due to the disease), and so I now must avoid foods high in Potassium. I had my nutrition class today, and still find eating and meal planning a little confusing. Mainly because I can't eat many of the suggested foods for a stage 2 kidney diet, because many are high in Potassium. Anyone else have a struggle learning how to plan and eat again?

My stage of kidney disease changes often, my last test showed stage one, retested yesterday, waiting for results. In the past 6 months it was stage 3,last test stage 1,waiting for my recent test results. I have no idea of what diet I should be on and am going to be put on warfarin blood thinner for a blood clot that requires a medium level potassium diet. My recent potassium showed a little high but not over the limit. I can track my food menu in advance to see that the total input is correct, with the new blood thinners, potassium is checked 3 times a week and medication and diet can be changed then too.The only kidney diets I have found is stage 4-5. I am arranging to get blood tests regarding what type of protein and what type of diet works best for my body. Hopefully it will be more accurate and tailored to my health only.

This is my problem also. I am not sure which foods are not good for me to eat. I have type 2 diabetes with neuropy in my lower legs. I know I should not eat food with a lot of potassium but I know nothing about protein or any other type of food that is good or bad for me. I am unable to tell which foods are good for me from the diets included in the Davita recipes. I would just like a simple list of which foods are ok and the ones that I should avoid.

Renal diet is very confusing!! I am on a low potassium, phosphorus, sodium diet. I am stage 3 chronic kidney disease.
Your on sight dietician can help you plan your diet or guide you into eating better. The Davita website is awesome!!
It offers many recipes & teaching webinars. The diet helper is a good go to. Reach out to your dietican or the Davita website!!
I am not a Davita patient and I find the website VERY INFORMATIVE!! GOOD LUCK!!!!

Hi mamabear4byz, welcome to myDaVita! Have you had a chance to try the DaVita Diet Helper yet? It allows you plan and track kidney-friendly meals that adhere to your nutritional goals so I think it may help you find meals that are low in potassium. It will also allow you to search for both kidney-friendly and diabetes-friendly meals, which may help as well.

It's also always best to speak with a local dietitian if you have any specific questions as everyone's needs are different.

          Have a nice weekend!
