When I got my annual physical, bloodwork showed normal levels for everything except high BUN and slightly high creatinine The doctor suggested not taking the diuretic (been on it for years) for BP as long as possible, getting rechecked in 2 weeks. I went 9 days without the diuretic, then had to restart it. When bloodwork was rechecked, BUN level dropped 50% and was now normal, creatinine also dropped. The doctor wanted a recheck in a month. I continued with the diuretic, but this time BUN tripled and creatinine also went up. In 6 weeks I went from stage 3A kidney failure to stage 1 or none, to stage 3B, almost stage 4. I was given a referral to a nephrologist to see if the problem is the diuretic, but have to wait for Medicare approval (about a month). I am very confused and very frightened not knowing what is going on. Kidney Care specialist at National Kidney Foundation said it sounds like I will soon be on dialysis, could die before I see the specialist, could live 2 years on dialysis. Wow. I was stunned, hard to believe since I have no symptoms, BP is controlled with meds, not diabetic. Does anyone have any insight on wild swings in BUN? Many thanks!

Dialysis isn't so bad. It's scary at first and is a lifestyle change. I've been at it for 4 months and have adapted well. At least there are options if you have to start dialysis soon. Good luck to you.

My egfr has went from 70 once to as low as 47 back up to 64 and back down to 58. Numbers go from one extreme to the next, even fasting makes them go down. If your number go down in 30's and stay there for 3 months then I would be worried that its not going to come up much and still doesn't mean your going to get to that point. People can live a long time on dialysis. The kidney care specialist that doesn't know all your labs, history and isn't a dr shouldn't be telling you scary things like that. Kidney Diet can change things in a big way as well. There is plenty of hope out there for CKD and Dr's are really good at helping people as well. I've had all kinds of stuff because of my kidneys, low vitamin D, secondary hyperparathyroidism renal origin, metabolic acidosis etc .. They do real good at treating all of it. Good Luck
