Baking Soda (sodium bicarbonate)
Has anyone's nephrologist suggested sodium bicarbonate? My creatinine has been slowly rising from 1.0 (since 1997) to 1.1 (2011) to 1.33 (April 25, 2016). At 1.1 in 2011, I was told by a nephrologist that I probably did not have CKD. I am female, 5'10", and fairly muscular, so he said I could have gfr higher than what creatinine indicated (at that time 58). However, at 1.33 creatinine (egfr 48), there is no denying that I most likely do have CKD. I am very worried, which has made me do some research. There are many studies indicating that sodium bicarbonate may help preserve kidney function in individuals with low serum CO2 levels. My CO2 level is always in the low 20's, which is considered low, yet the nephrologist didn't mention the baking soda/bicarbonate. With the research, it seems that more nephrologists would recommend the bicarbonate treatment. So why don't they? Here is a link to one of the studies: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19608703Shari, age 43
