  • How much fluid to drink on stage 4 CKD?

Hello fellows with CKD. I'm 29 years old and I'm new here but I've had kidney disease since I was 11 years old (when the doctors first diagnosed me with IgA neuropathy.) I just had a second kidney biopsy a couple weeks ago and didn't get any great news. So I'm making major lifestyle changes (exercising, low sodium/phosphorus diet, removing harmful foods from my diet, etc..) I read somewhere that I need to limit my fluid intake as to not let my kidneys work too much. I drink all kinds of stuff since water bores me but I need to know about how much fluid I should drink per day so I can start to measure my fluid intake.

I'm currently drinking water, orange juice, apple juice, grape juice, almond milk, unsweetened decaffeinated tea, and an occasional diet Dr. Pepper to help control the urges to drink sodas. Are there any kidney-healthy drinks I should try out? Any carbonated drinks that would be safe?

    Thanks, y'all!

Well I'm certainly no expert but from what I've read on here... oranges/orange juice are a no no... and any dark cola product also should be avoided. I am a caregiver for my dad who recently started dialysis and his doctor has him restricted to 32 oz - which is hard as that includes more than just drinks! Soup, ice cream, yogurt... you should talk to your doctor and perhaps a renal dietician! Good Luck!

Hi joeybartlett86, thanks for reaching out here and welcome to myDaVita! As kkcow143 suggested, it's probably best to ask your local care team, including a nephrologist or renal dietitian, to determine how much fluid intake you should consume at this time. Everyone's needs are different. Let me know if you have any questions with myDaVita and I hope you have a great day!
