  • I have been on stage 4 but still not on dialysis

    Hi

Just want to tell everyone that if you follow your diet correctly you could be as lucky as me being on stage 4 but not being on the dialysis machine or waiting for a transplant.
I was lucky, the library had a book from an American Uni, all about how to have kidney failure and being able to stay healthly. Then I was very lucky to come aacross this web site. With help from Davita and this book I have been able to maintane my work load and social life. There is hope for all of us and there are lots of people ready to help you just ask.

I am a great believer in doing things to help ward off diaysis. Kidney problems started for me back in 1980's now due to start dialysis very soon as GFR down to 8. I cut out salt, only eat home cooked food so I know what I am eating, no alchol at all. I think it has all helped to keep me stable.

We all agree that the right individualized diet for you can slow the progression and help your body be as strong and healthy as possible. You may be able to lower your creatinine level and raise your GFR. Unfortunately the actual damage that has been done is not "reversible" in CKD by eating the right food. I would be cautious about fast diet claims and stories too good to be true. Follow the advice of your health care team.

My response in the 1st paragraph was to a reply before mine that has been removed by a moderator.
May you always have Love to share, Health to spare, and Friends that care

I am also a stage 4 patient and I'm not on dialysis either. I, like you, try diligently to eat right and keep my chemicals balanced as best I can. It gets difficult at times but I just discovered this site and I believe the menus, recipes will help me tremedously. It's a great site with loads of great information. I will use it daily.

I am very new to this site; just joined today. However, I must say I think I've struck gold. I'm ESRF and fortunate NOT to be on dialysis. I received the implant for dialysis almost three yeaers ago and have never had to use it yet. I've diligently tried to stay off that machine. It get's harder each year however. It's hard to keep my diet right and my chemicals level. But since finding this site I think it will help me a lot. I'm going to start using the menus and recipes asap. I'm going shopping this weekend. Oh, and yes, they even give you a shopping list for your meals. It's really great.

I'm very happy I found this site. it has helped me tremendously especially with keeping my phosphorous levels down. It's provided me with great recipies to help me eat good food that's also renal healthy. I have polycystic kidney disease; it's hereditary and has run through my family like a brush fire. I'm truly blessed at 65 becasue by the time my grandmother, mom, brother, sister, nieces all reached this age and before they were aleady on dialysis or dead. So I'm blessed and keep working to stay as healthy as I can.

I am on pd dialysis now and have been on it for 2 months previously on temp hemo for 2 months. I wish I could talk to you personally and share with you some experiances and what you have ahaead of you. Your diet is going to depend on your lvls in your blood. Kreatinin, protien etc. There is alot of determining factors. I was diagnosed with IGA so what people could eat for reg kidney failure was still dangerouse for me. Until I got my temp hemo dialysis ports put in I was eating less than a vegitarian. I can say this watch your phosferouse lvls eat two tums with every meal they will block phosferouse . For me it was avoid anything with the word phos in it, absolutly little to no protien and stay away from the sodium. Please contact me and let me know how everything is going.

I am new to this forum and am learning a lot. I am pre-dialysis. Believe my GFR is 13-16. I do have the fistula (got in August 2011). I can feel the blood pumping in my veins. Looking forward to reading more posts in the various forums.

I've been in stage 4 for a long time now. I try to follow my diet and watch what medication I take. However, I also think exercise has helped me. I attend a water exercise class twice a week as well as a yoga class. It makes me feel I have more control over my body.

I have to agree with Tonia...maintaining good mineral levels can preserve your energy level and general well-being, but the underlying damage does continue. My GFR is 23 at the moment, and my long-range plan is to do with PD with cycler. I walk at least a mile every day and swim during warm weather. My doc said recently that she is awed by my energy level. So everybody keep doing what you're doing so that we can all feel as well as possible!

Re: I have been on stage 4 but still not on dialysis

I'm stage 4 myself, and I've been trying to follow a reduced-protein diet for a couple of months now, with the help of a book written by a researcher from johns Hopkins as a guide. I'm keeping my protein intake at around 50g/day, and I still occasionally eat 'bad foods', but only in moderation. My biggest problem, though, is keeping my energy level up. With protein restricted, I have to rely more on carbs and fats for energy. Carbs don't give you energy that lasts, and fats tend to make you sluggish for a while after eating them. I generally snack all day, just to keep energy levels up. I used to be able to cycle 100 miles in a day, but I don't have that kind of energy anymore.

BTW, I'm also trying amino acid supplements (with restricted protein intake, you will eventually lack certain amino acids), but have yet to find a capsule small enough to be able to swallow! I bought some from GNC, and they are the size of horse pills!
