  • Canulation machine?

An experienced RN at my dialysis center (who has years of ER experience) tells me that there are machines available for the process of inserting IV needles into unprepared veins, and they have been available for years. This makes me wonder if just such a machine could be used for inserting dialysis needles into a fistula? I know that machines can be rather...mechanical, but the nice thing about a machine is that they can do the same procedure almost exactly the same each time.

Wouldn't it be nice if on the day you go for dialysis, and the technician who you don't have much faith in their canulation technique was on duty, you could have the option of letting the 'canulation machine' do the deed? Wouldn't this be likely to cut down on infiltrations, and extra costs incurred?
