  • CKD Testing

    Hi everyone,

Was wondering how often others are tested for their kidney function? I recently changed insurance which led to a different Dr. At stage 3, my present Dr. feels that twice a year is enough, while my old Dr. tested my function 4 times a year. I have to take medicine to manage ulcerative colitis. These meds are known to possibly decline kidney function, so the frequent testing is important. If anyone out there is in a similar situation, I'd love to hear from you.

    Thanks, Toni

    Tonia,

I see my nephrologist every three months, but I must admit I have pretty good insurance. What are your numbers? The last time I went in mine were--creatinine 1.7, BUN 18. My doctor doesn't really get into GFRs, but I think I am stage three, on the higher side-close to two?

      Tonia,
I am also stage 3 and my GFR has been pretty stable at around 35 - 37 for a year. I have been having a creatinine done every 2 months with more labs before a 6-month follow-up. That will be on the 27th of this month, and the frequency of labs may or may not stay the same. I'll let you guys know.

Gary, At the last test my creatinine was 1.17 down from 1.5 two yrs. ago. Bun is now at 27 down from 38. Still stage 3. My current GP does not focus much on my ckd. Shes more concerned about my cholesterol and triglyceride counts. I probably won't see the nephroligist again unless things progress.
Thats most likely an insurance issue. Your fortunate to have a specialist overlooking your care.

Thanks for your reply--Take care, Toni

Janice, Wow, labs every two months. That would give me more security. This is a fairly new Dr. for me and I think a talk with her about my concerns is needed. I've had a few different Drs. since I was diagnosed and they all use different guidelines for labs.

I hope your doing well & hopefully your lab results will be okay. I appreciate the message, Toni

That is preety good that you halved your creatinine level. I might not be correct but a 1.17 is probably not stage three. I dont even think it would really be classified as ckd. Or maybe it is just borderline. Good job. Maybe that is why you are not seeing your doc as much

Gary, Hi again, I made a mistake about my labs. 2 yrs. ago my creatine level was 1.5, not 2.5 I had ultrasounds done and they showed irreversible damage to both kidneys. And the higher than normal BUN indicates kidneys are not normal. Wish it was possibly true that it no longer existed, but not so. According to my Drs., I'm still at stage 3.

                Toni (just edited message-thanks)

Pal, Appreciate your reply. I guess Drs. have a plan they feel best suits each paient.

I hope your doing okay. At stage 4, are you having more symptoms?

                  Thanks again, Toni

                      Re: CKD Testing

I talked to my GP about CKD testing and she was willing to put in a standing order to test me every 3 months. The fairly new calculator she uses includes weight and BUN. My creatinine did go up some, but not enough for any concern. Anyway, I feel more at ease knowing I'll be tested more often.

It does pay to talk openly to your Drs. Especially if you have multiple health issues. I have experienced times when my old Dr. would concentrate on 1 issue at a time. (is that a man thing?--sorry guys-- women are so good at multi tasking!!)

Thanks for the messages. Hope everyone has a good weekend. It's actually sunny in Seattle!

                        Tonia,

Up until recently I have been in stage 3. My Dr. did labwork twice a year. My recent labwork indicates that I am now in stage 4. I see my Dr. next week so we will see what changes will be made if any. I went from a creatine level of 1.67 to 2.06 and my GFR went from 36 to 27.

I fortunately don't really have any other health issues to be concerned about. But I would definately communicate your concerns with your Dr. and hope that you can be on the same page.
