forced fluid limits

The dialysis center I go to forces all patients to restrict fluids even if they dont have to normally. No coffee, no tea or hot water while you are running and only one small cup of ice or water. This is for the whole floor for every run.
Whats going on? Did I lose my rights to make my own health care choices? I most certainly lost any comfort to the dialysis procedure. These fluid restrictions on me have not been ordered by my Dr.
What gives the manager the right to do that.
How long before the management wants into my house to inspect my food choices?
Thats what it seems like its coming to.

I hear you. That's not right. They can suggest, but NEVER restrict. Patient rights go a long way. Good luck and don't be afraid to give them hell. Remember, you and your insurance are paying them.

I just started dialysis and I am on a restriction of a quart and a half of fluids per day.

Because I do Home hemo the weight is kept carefully between 49-50 k. Some days more fluid needs t be removed some days less.
I would certainly voice my concerns with that center and ask them about suggesting rather than telling. You are right in that you should be able to determine how you will handle this disease, but there might be a lohical reason for them making these restrictions

I'm not on dialsys but have a restriction already. Not sure what 45 fluid oz is in cc's but it's not a lot. This is very difficult to do, i'm just saying.

There are 30 cc in an oz.

That sounds pretty harsh to me. Is it because of the amount of fluid they have to pull off? Seems like I heard somewhere that the centers are rated by the number/percentage of patients they keep at the prescribed dry weight at the end of their treatment?

They can not force you to limit your fluids, they can limit what they provide and recommend and even admonish you if you go beyond. Bring your own water, coffee, soda etc.. at my center there is even one guy who orders Domino's to be delivered! The tech's and dietician can be heard lecturing him but he just smiles, eats and offers them a slice. I'm limited to 1,000 ml (approx 34 oz) of fluid a day (doc's orders), it's tough. I often go over and have to face the "looks" and "head shaking" during the next run. FDA/Social Security rates the centers on a variety of things including dry weight, access type, hospital stays etc... so the centers have a motivation to keep you in line, but you have your rights to do as you wish!

Obviously, fluid restrictions are out of concern for your kidney function and health. They may "tell" you but obviously you are not in prison. Everyone on dialysis has fluid restrictions and some that are close to kidney failure. It is for your own good! Or you can choose not to follow the doctor and healthcare professionals recommendations and die. Your choice. Plain and simple. I want to live so I take their advice seriously.

Great insight from people who are undergoing dialysis. My mom is going through dialysis as well and there is a recommended fluid intake but the hospital does not restrict her if she wants to take a little bit more.

I have been on dialysis now for 2 years. I continue to have problems limiting my fluid intake. I limit my self to 3.4 kg as my body cramps if I try to take off 3.5. My problem is after the weekend when I have been away from dialysis for 2 day, I do in center dialysis. I try to limit my intake to 24 oz as I know I also get fluids for foods I eat
