    Now semi-retired, Dr. McElhinney graciously granted an interview to the Web site KennethAppellMD.com on April 14, 2009 at his home in Pelham, New York, just north of the Bronx. In it, he discusses Dr. Appell's revolutionary 1963 invention of the arteriovenous fistula (aka the AV fistula, sometimes erroneously called the Brescia-Cimino shunt).
