  • Understanding- Elder Mom with Congestive heart failure we have questions

My mom has recently been diagnosed with Kidney Failure. This week we did see the Specialist. She really did not give us much information, or what we hoped to get.
We were told by the Specialist that my mom's kidneys were functioning at 25%.
She did draw a graph for us and her level has escalated over the last year dramatically
Our mom is 80 and does have congestive heart disease.

The Dr said we will be having to take her for a lot of blood tests over the next couple of months and then after that we will most likely be faced with making some serious decisions.

She really did not give us much else.

Does any one have an older parent out there that is having some of problems ? We don't know a lot about what all is coming around the corner. I know you cannot live with out your Kidneys

    Hi Marie,

sorry to hear your mom's kidneys are giving up.

At 25% function thats stage 4 CKD ... almost time for her to do dialysis. Once stage 5 comes she needs dialysis.

For the age she is and depending other complications she may have... it is a difficult decision whether to continue dialysis or not, but if she's alert and speaks you can talk to her about her options and find out what she wants.

What I can tell is that there are people her age doing dialysis and some of them do it home being cared by their families. I do dialysis at home myself, so maybe you'd want to ask her Doctor about the option of home dialysis for her.
