  • Ketogenic Diet

I've recently been diagnosed with Stage 3B CKD and am trying to keep from sliding any closer to stage 4. Right now my GFR is 32. In the last month I've been counting calories and lost 23 pounds and got my blood sugar down to a daily average of 106. Now I'm taking a look at the nutritional values of my diet. I've been using My Fitness Pal so I can see those values. Right now I'm doing a Keto type diet with lower carbs, higher protein and higher fat. I asked my doctor about the amount of protein I am eating and she okay with it (approx 90 grams a day). Right now I'm wondering if I really should try going as low as the diet recommends on carbs and as high as recommended on the fat. It just seems counter to what I would do if I were a healthy person. The diet is recommending 20 grams of carbs, 126 grams of protein and 267 grams of fat.

Has anyone out there used this? There is an old article out on the internet from 2011 recommending this for CHD>

Hi Pat, it's nice to meet you! Welcome to myDaVita. I'd recommend asking any specific diet questions to your local dietitian as everyone's needs are different. Have a great day!

I am at stage 3b. My GFR is 35 at the moment. It has been there for a while. My doctor says I am stable at the moment. About your diet...Wow that is a lot of protein. Diets in general don't help kidney disease. Changing your eating habits maybe. You need to take a look at the kidney friendly diet. Fat in moderation not excess. There are many foods that are not healthy for kidney disease. And you don't want to do anything that may raise your cholesterol and hurt your heart which sometimes comes along with kidney disease. In my opinion nix the diet and just eat kidney friendly foods and smaller portions. When your gut tells you a healthy person would not eat that then it is not okay for a person with kidney disease either. Remember any diet you look at is not meant for people with kidney disease. And your nephrologist is good with this diet? Are you seeing a nephrologist? Take Care
