  • Alkaline water

    Hi everyone!

I suffer from metabolic acidosis. I have stage 3B ckd. I recently bought some Alkaline water. To my surprise, the second ingredient on the label is potassium bicarbonate. Would this cause an increase in my blood potassium level?

Did your doctor tell you to get Alkaline water? We are told to stay away from food and drinks that have potassium in the ingredients. I looked up alkaline water and it said it might be bad for people with kidney disease. This is what it said.

"However, this may not always be a benefit. For example, if someone has a kidney condition, or is taking a medication that alters kidney function, some of the minerals in alkaline water could start to accumulate in the body. For these people, high alkalinity might lead to negative side effects."

I have heard of people being treated with sodium bicarbonate (baking soda). But that can also be dangerous if taken the wrong way. Everybody is different. I would ask your doctor about using it before you do. Good Luck

Hi there, welcome to myDaVita! I'd recommend speaking with your local dietitian. Everyone's needs are different, so it'd be best to speak to someone who can address your specific concerns. Don't hesitate to reach back out to me if you have any questions with myDaVita. Thank you!
