Recently my potassium was 5.4--I am diabetic (for over 30 years, type 2) and I also take ace inhibitors/beta blockers for blood pressure (known to elevate potassium levels) and prilosec (recently implicated in kidney issues for susceptible people.) Last year I also had an elevated potassium level went a week cutting down on potassium rich foods and got it down to 4.9 and frankly thought that the test might have been a fluke and went back to my bad habits. Obviously I need to make permanent changes, and that is why I am here.

Looks like I win the High Potassium contest. In November of 2014 I met my new Nephrologist (Dr. Sal) out of the Hot Springs Renal Group. The next day I was starting to feel very bad, weakened so much that I actually collapsed on my way down the hall. I was so weak that it took two people to get me up again. Right after I had fallen, I get a call from Dr. Sal's nurse asking how I felt. I told her Sh#ty and she said that yea, she thought that I would be. She told me that I needed to be in the emergency room RIGHT NOW! My Potassium level was extremely elevated. My sister piled me and my mother into her car and drove us the 80 miles to the hospital. By the time we got there, I needed assistance getting into a wheel chair and to go to the bathroom. When they finally got me triaged and checked in they told me that my potassium level was ... wait for it ...
8.5
Just a few more tenths, and I was reaching lethal levels. Dr. Desoto (Nephrologist on call) came in ant told me that he would be back as soon as possible, he was trying to save a lady who's level was 8.9, but mine was so high that they needed to work on me as soon as possible. they gave me some medicine that caused "the runs" which helped flush the potassium out! (Who would have thunk).
Today my level is down to a respectable 4.2 and I avoid ALL high potassium foods (like oranges and banana's). Now if only my phosphorus levels would stay low without my having to take phosphorus binders. (They are very expensive).

Hi JKMoss89, welcome to myDaVita! Have you used the DaVita Diet Helper yet? It allows you to enter your nutritional targets - including potassium, phosphorus & sodium daily limits - and then helps you plan and track kidney-friendly meals that meet those restrictions. It may help you keep your phosphorus levels down. Give it a try here: http://bit.ly/1YihzIf. It's also recommended to speak with your local dietitian to get any specific questions answered. I hope that helps!
Have a great weekend!

I was never told my Potassium level, but 13 months a go it was very high and now it is very low. My G.F.R. was 68 and is now 60,my Mean Corposcular volume = average volume of red blood cells per 100 milliliter of blood is 5 and suppose to be 100. I have anemia and my kidneys are not producing Erythropoietin and I was given a Erythropoietin Hormone Replacement injection at half the usual dosage to help my red blood cell count. I was also given a 10 weeks supply of Iron supplements with hemogloblin added to it. I did not know I was suppose to have problems at this stage. I am not overweight and do not know if I should change my diet.

Mine is now normal 4.1 and I eat a lot of potassium rich foods as I am in stage 2, but do have side effects, blood clots in my lung, severe pain in my legs when walking, kidneys stopped producing the hormone that makes hemoglobin, was given a replacement shot. I see a internal medicine specialist that deals with chronic kidney disease, blood clots, heart, lungs and all organs to see what can be done about this. My kidneys decreased 30% in 2 years and now is starting to go back up. I need to know what to do for it to go up a little more. I do not know if it will stay but 3 years a go was 90%. 1 year ago 60%, 70% 5 months a go ,now up to 80%.I have to add extra salt, fat & cholesterol as mine is too low, I was told no low fat/no fat foods.
