  • Getting worse every month.

My husband was diagnosed with stage 3 kidney disease in October 2013. The latest lab results have moved him into the stage 4 level. The kidney doctor said that due to the rate of decline he will need to start dialysis in the next six months with transplant in the future. Here are his latest labs (only the abnormal ones) and then after that I'll explain his latest symptoms. Before they started treating the kidney disease he had no symptoms!
    WBC 10.9 H
    RBC 3.51 L
    Hemoglobin 11.1 L
    Heatocrit 32.7 L
    Absolute neutrophils 8284 H
    Uric Acid 10.7 H
    Urea nitrogen (BUN) 58 H
    Creatinine 3.20 H
    eGFR non-afr. american 23 L
    Calcium 7.5 L
    Parathyroid Hormone 332 H
    Calcium 7.8 L
    Uric Acid 10.7 H
    Urinalysis
    Occult Blood +3
    Protein +3

We found out about the kidney disease due to his health card (CDL driver) expiring and needing a new one. At that appointment his blood pressure was 210/180!!! They got his blood pressure under control but then his kidney values got even worse. They changed the blood pressure medication which made his kidneys happy but then his blood pressure went back up. They did manage to get his potassium levels normal again and his blood pressure not as high, but still high. They did an ultrasound of his kidneys and it came back that there is scar tissue on both kidneys. They believe he got kidney damage in a car accident he had many years ago that required him to be life flighted, have several blood transfusion and his heart stopped several times. At that time no kidney damage was discovered.

He has a lot of symptoms and despite treatment, a kidney/Gout diet that is religiously followed, he continues to get worse. He is always tired, and has continuous gout unless he is on high dose steroids despite being on preventive medicine for it. He is short of breath, foamy pee when he can pee, everything taste like salt (he says), and apnea at night while sleeping. He has missed so much work that they are hinting at firing him for absences. He physically struggles every single day to go to work but continues to go because we cannot afford to lose his income (in the works to move to lower rent) or the medical coverage. He cannot apply for disability (SSI/SSDI) while working and long term disability through his work (he was approved) after the 9th day of not working is a whopping $100 (he makes about $1,000) a week!

He is now at the point of not being able to work but the kidney doctor says he is not sending him for dialysis yet. I don't understand why. Don't misunderstand me, I don't want my husband on dialysis but I also see his kidney function go down every single blood test.

All I see is my husband deteriorating before my eyes and it scares me to death!

From the GFR numbers, he doesn't look like he's ready for dialysis yet. I'm assuming that between the hypertension and the gout (and possibly other problems), these are what's causing most of his issues, and dialysis won't likely cure them. BTW, as a former driver myself, I can assure you that he will NOT be able to continue driving while on dialysis. Sorry, but that's the truth.

1caregiver....I sent you a message in you message box. I am concerned about the uric acid numbers. I have been on Allopurinol for over 20 years because of that and it has been wonderful. It helps the joint pain some and I don't have flare ups or stones anymore. I take it faithfully. It is an older medication but it works. It is also cheap. I was told when I started taking it that 8.9 was too high and the kidney's could stop functioning. So 10;7 is a red flag for me. I would ask the doctor for the medication to control that number. That should also help slow down the process of kidney failure.

The gout is from the kidney disease not from hypertension according to the kidney doctor. The hypertension is from the kidney disease according to the kidney and primary care doc's. He was cleared by cardio and they said his heart is good. He has never had gout before but now we cannot get rid of it unless he is on high dose steriods, which the kidney doc said he does not want him on. His blood pressure is currently 125/70. I already know that he cannot drive on dialysis, heck even some medications make him ineligible to drive When he is not on steriods he cannot drive anyway because of the gout.

Since October of 2013 he has lost, on average, 2% of kidney function a month despite treatment. At this rate he will be below 15% within 5 months. I cannot imagine how sick he will be by then given how badly he feels now!
