  • stage 4...is this really happening to me??????

My ortho doc ordered blood work back in November 2013....advised me of numbers being very low. he referred me back to my primary doc who also did blood work...she called right away to refer me to a nephrologist. I saw him 2 weeks ago. we spent a lot of time talking, he asked more questions about my health and family history than I have ever encountered. he advised according to lab work from Nov and then again in December...I am in stage 4 of ckd...he sent me out for more bloodwork and an ultra sound of my kidneys and I also did a second round of bloodwork yesterday. now I have 2 more days til I see him to know what direction to take...I was so dumbfounded the day he advised me of my stage 4 with a gfr of 23...I didn't ask any questions...you can imaguine...I have had a million quests rolling round my brain in the last 2 weeks. it all seems surreal...like it is just a statement that was put out there...but it does not apply to me. what do I do with this ...it is all I can think about in my waking hours.

Search the web (http://kidneyschool.org/mods/) for answers to questions and then other questions write down and ask the doctor when you see him.
Did the doctor ask if others in your family died at an early age (grandparents or aunts and uncles)/ The ultra sound is safer on kidney's than a CT scan. Less dye in the system is better if you are in stage 4. Your kidneys would not be able to get rid of the dye and can damage them. The ultra sound will show size and if there are cysts in the kidney's. It also shows how well they are working. How much your bladder is holding after you pee is also tested.
I hope some of this helps you. I remember when I first hit 28 and was in stage 4 and was told to drink more water and my next blood work it went up to 32 and stage three. I was so happy. It didn't stay there for long but it did for about a year. Then slowly went down in about five years time. Look at the diet info on this site and stop eating things with salt. I don't cook with salt and am now doing real good about looking a labels and refusing to buy a lot of things I use to like. I don't like them because they don't make me feel good after I eat them. Praying you stay positive. Do all you can, staying positive and eating right helps to keep you healthier.
